Curry houses of Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge reach out to help Rohingya refugees

A FUNDRAISING drive has been launched by The Bangladesh Welfare Association of Royal Tunbridge Wells [BWA] with 65 local restaurants to raise money for those caught up in the Rohingya refugee crisis.

On Wednesday, November 22, participating businesses will give 50 per cent of their proceeds from diners to help charities involved in the region.

BWA has a proud tradition of helping disaster relief efforts and community projects for the poor and vulnerable in Bangladesh.

In 2007 it held a similar initiative, involving 50 curry houses, to support victims of cyclone Sidr in the country.

‘We believe we can help the refugees currently in Bangladesh by contributing towards the broader effort’

According to the International Organization for Migration, which is related to the United Nations, more than 600,000 Rohingyas have crossed the border into Bangladesh because of persecution in the neighbouring country, Myanmar.

Kamal J Miah, the association’s President, said: “The BWA is spearheading the fundraiser in a purely humanitarian capacity. We may not be able to change what’s happening in Myanmar, but with the collective effort of our participating restaurants, and the generous support of the local communities across the various regions that are taking part, we believe we can help the refugees currently in Bangladesh by contributing towards the broader effort.”
