The only Shell Petrol station in Tunbridge Wells is closing this month for a major redevelopment.Â
The forecourt will be shut down on January 12 and is due to reopen six months later, in July.
The garage is one of the busiest in the town being sited on the A26 St John’s Road that attracts London-bound traffic.
The upgrade will see the sales building, the car wash and jet wash demolished to be replaced by a larger sales building.Â
A Shell spokesman confirmed the closure and said the ‘significant redevelopment’ would include ‘an extension of the retail offering’.
The planned closure has prompted speculation that the site will be home to a new Waitrose, something ruled out by the supermarket chain.
The Shell garage is situated next to an existing BP petrol station which houses an M&S food store.
