Taittinger plans first its first Kent vineyard

Gary Jefferies

THE scion of the only grand marque champagne house still run by its eponymous family, Taittinger, planted the first vines in its new venture into English sparkling wines last week.

Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger oversaw the planning of 50 acres of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grapes at the Domaine Evremond vineyard in Chilham. It comes 18 months after he first signalled his intention to start creating English sparkling wine, with the first vintages ready to be drunk in 2023.

Describing the rainy weather during the first planting as ‘good luck’ monsieur Taittinger said his venture ‘expresses the great friendship I feel for Great Britain’.
