SUPERMARKET chain Aldi will be opening a store in Tonbridge on the site of the old Homebase on Cannon Lane.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “Work on our new Tonbridge store is progressing well and we hope to open the store in spring next year.
“We expect this will create around 50 jobs and will keep the community updated on developments.”
The site is also set to feature a B&M store offering discounted products, although it is understood that the new outlet will be a dedicated clothing retailer.
The development will cost £2.8million, and is being undertaken by contractor Pexhurst over six months. The original Homebase was closed in June 2015.
News that Tonbridge is set to get an Aldi store comes two years after the discount chain said they were looking at building a brand new store in neighbouring Tunbridge Wells along the Eridge Road.
However, despite embarking on the planning process in September 2015, it was brought to a halt one month later.
No explanation has been given, and rumours of a dispute with the Manor of Rusthall, run by its titleholder Targetfollow, over access to the premises were denied.
Furthermore, the company announced in May that it was still looking for a suitable site in the town and would release more information ‘later this year’.
