We’re blessed for many reasons in this corner of the country and we bookworms are certainly well catered for. Whether you’re looking close to home or willing to pilgrimage slightly further afield for your literary fix, here are five bookshops that are perfect for booklovers in Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex.
Halls and Adrian Harrington Books, Tunbridge Wells
Halls is about as charming as a bookshop can get, with rustic wooden shelves that tower high enough to need a ladder, and there’s frankly nothing more romantic than climbing a ladder to reach top-shelf tomes! This is a second-hand shop with plenty of beautiful books, covering every conceivable topic. Upstairs is Adrian Harrington Books, a rare book specialist with plenty of treasures to discover. Unusually, this shop specialises in the work of Ian Fleming, so Bond fans should definitely seek this one out.

Barnett’s Books, Wadhurst
Barnett’s is nestled on Wadhurst’s quaint high street and its traditional frontage gives you a feel for the shop before you even step through its doors. This is a bookshop in its most traditional sense, which is just what we hope to find from independent booksellers. Books of all kinds line every wall and the charming children’s section at the back is sure to make even the most reluctant of young readers leaf through a page or two.

Rother Books, Battle
Rother Books in Battle is a newly-opened bookshop, still enjoying its first year, and is a brilliant mix of old and new. Occupying one of the ancient buildings that line the streets of the town, you’ll be surprised by the light and airy feel of the shop, despite the dark beams across the ceiling. Books are neatly displayed and tactile- you won’t be able to resist picking up titles as you browse!

Sevenoaks Bookshop
This is a surprisingly spacious bookshop on the high street of Sevenoaks and is bustling in the best way. It’s a browser’s paradise with clever shelving that makes it really easy to find the books you were looking for, and displays at every turn for discovering the ones you weren’t. This shop has made the ingenious move of putting books alongside cake, which means that our two loves are combined with one visit. And what cakes they are – some of the best in the town, hands down!
