Beacon students enjoy a capital maths seminar

They undertook the trip to take part in a series of specialist lectures given by mathematicians, economists, statisticians, architects and data scientists as part of the recent  ‘Maths in Action’ enrichment day.

Organised by The Training Partnership at the Emmanuel Centre, the event provided an opportunity for the Crowborough students to meet experts in the mathematics field, and to listen to a number of engaging talks and debate mathematical theories.

The lectures included one on Fermat’s Last Theorem, given by Simon Singh, and another entitled Fighting Disease with Mathematics by Sara Jabbari from the University of Birmingham.

They also took part in a practical session with puzzles and conundrums hosted by Ed Southall from the University of Huddersfield.

Additionally, the students enjoyed talks by Tim Harford, OBE, economist and journalist, and one entitled How to Make the World Add Up: The Hidden Maths of Technology by Zoe Griffiths.
