Bitesize: The George & Dragon, Speldhurst

Seabass with samphire

Tucked just outside of Tunbridge Wells in the village of Speldhurst, The George & Dragon gained new ownership in 2017, and has been making waves in the local foodie scene ever since.
The charming 13th century building has plenty of rustic charm and a lovely, cosy feel with open fires and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

We had…

Seabass with samphire

The meal started off with a large glass of Malbec (£10), followed by some olives to share (£3.50) while we perused the menu.
In the end, we went for the half pint of shell-on prawns (£6) and the chicken liver parfait (£8.50). Both were delicious and we managed to polish off the lot.

Fish was the dish of the day for both our mains – we chose the fish & chips (£13.50) and the pan seared fillet of seabass (£19). All their fish is sourced from Sankey’s in Tunbridge Wells, and as you’d expect, it’s lovely and fresh. The seabass was topped with prawns and mussels too…amazing.

You might think we’d be full, and you’d be right – but that didn’t stop us ordering dessert – the caramelised lemon tart (£6.50), served with blackcurrant sorbet and raspberries. This was really tasty – sharp and tangy yet creamy.

We thought…

We wish this was our local pub – everything was so lovely, from the friendly service to the delicious food. Most of the diners were locals, which is definitely encouraging, and the menu had a lot of options, so you definitely won’t be limited on choice!
