The Tonbridge club, formerly known as Tonbridge Printers, changed their name in honour of Chris’s father Colin, the legendary England batsman.
He attended Tonbridge School – as did both his descendants – and was later appointed Lord Cowdrey of Tonbridge.
The club’s President Bill Warner wrote to him asking if they could rename the club and he responded to say he would be delighted.

On Saturday Cowdrey were once again frustrated by the weather, which has made their campaign in Kent League Division Three a stop-start affair following their promotion.
Catford Wanderers won the toss at Swanmead and elected to bat. Remi Chea, who made 56 with six fours and six, made a steady start.
But the home side’s quartet of pace bowlers kept Catford in check and at the halfway stage they had reached 103 for 2.
The introduction of Sri Lankan off-spinner Minhaj Jalill (2 for 37) and Richard Marsh (2 for 25) sparked a middle-order collapse after Shavawn Cunningham fell for 32.
The tall and fiery Nick Farr then returned to polish off the innings, picking up 3 for 28, while Jason Carver ran out Menesh Gunalan (33) to end his resistance.
Cowdrey’s chase got off to a bad start as they lost both openers with 13 on the board, but they were rescued by a gritty, unbeaten 19 off 64 balls by Carver and a sublime 54 not out from all-rounder Jalill off just 46 balls.
With Cowdrey well on top needing 103 off 28 overs the rains came and the match had to be abandoned.
The 10 points take the Tonbridge team up to fourth place, having lost only once in six games.
Cowdrey now host Catford & Cyphers on Saturday (June 22).
