IT’S going to be a busy weekend in the town centre with a variety of cultural events on offer as the Tonbridge Town Team stages its fifth annual Dragon Boat Race.

The popular event on Sunday [September 10] will coincide with a free Medieval Fair being held on Castle Lawn over both days.

The pedestrianised River Walk will play host to a variety of stalls and attractions.

The fair will feature a demonstration of how a knight is armed, combat displays, music, dance and Bosco the Jester. A range of 15th century arts and crafts will be on sale.

There will also be Jane Austen themed walking tours in the town, starting at 11am on both days at the Castle Gateway.

Tonbridge Art Group, Tonbridge Civic Society, Tonbridge Historical Society, Tonbridge Parish Church Bell Ringers and the Jane Austen Society will have exhibits at the castle.

There are 23 teams taking part in the popular Dragon Boat Race from local businesses, charities and schools. The crews comprise 16 rowers and one drummer. The entrants raise money for their own chosen charities.

The competition runs from 10am to 4pm with the Mayor of Tonbridge & Malling, Roger Dalton, presenting the prizes.

Race Director Sarah Spence said: “Our Tonbridge Town Team volunteers have put in many man hours, which are well worth it, and we look forward to creating another brilliant event this year.”
