Football: Blewden and Elder keep Angels in contention for play-offs

Football: Kwayie steals in to snatch victory for Tonbridge Angels in nine-goal thriller

THE manager of Tonbridge Angels hailed an away win over Needham Market as a key push towards the promotion play-off place with a couple of games in hand over clubs above them in the Ryman Premier.

Steve McKimm said his side had put the disappointment of the cup replay loss against Kingstonian behind them.

He said: “We’ve had those couple of cup matches and we are back to focus on the league. It was a long way for them to travel but they all did well.”

After just two minutes, Tom Phipp received a short ball from a corner, and his perfect cross deceived Needham’s goalkeeper Daniel Gay. Angels striker Luke Blewden was on hand at the far post with a simple header to take the lead.

On 20 minutes, the referee was hit in the neck with a full force of a clearance from Tom Phipp. It looked as if the match might have to have been abandoned, but a linesman took over.

Within a minute the Angels went further ahead. Nick Wheeler floated a free-kick into the area, George Beavan got his head to it and Nathan Elder turned and volleyed into the corner of the net.
