Football: Tonbridge Angels' Chairman Steve Churcher stands down

STEVE CHURCHER has decided to step down as Chairman of Tonbridge Angels with effect from this month’s Annual General Meeting and will not seek re-election to the Board.

Steve, 59, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be undergoing a programme of radiotherapy next year.

As Chairman of the supporters association he was invited to become club President in 2007, and after the resignation of Nick Sullivan in 2009 Steve was elected Chairman by the board.

Club spokesman James Rowe said: “For our fantastic club the news represents something of a challenge. That adjective ‘fantastic’ is appropriate because of the enormous hard work and vision that Steve has contributed over the last nine years.

“He recalls first being taken to the old Angel Ground when he was around 10 years old.

“Despite playing local football himself he continued to come to games when he could, racking up around a half century of cheering on the lads in blue from the terraces.”

He added: “First and foremost he was and still will be a true supporter with a terrific sense of humour. He may sit in the directors’ box but that enthusiasm continues to shine through as instanced when we scored that very very late winner against Needham Market two weeks ago.”

During his tenure Steve has taken the club into community ownership in 2014, allowing supporters a direct say in how their club is run.
