FLY THE FLAG: Alexander Dunmall represents Britain at Longniddry

Alexander, from Five Oak Green, qualified for the global tournament after a successful competitive debut at St Andrews last year.

The competition was held over three days at Longniddry Golf Club in East Lothian, with the young golfers playing three rounds.

More than 600 children took part from 57 different countries, ranging from the USA, South Africa, Australia and Thailand.

Alexander competed in the under-seven category with 40 other children and secured third place overall – he was the highest ranked British boy in that age category.

‘Once he was able to start playing golf it was business as normal. He took it all in his stride like a pro’

His mother Claire said: “It was beyond our wildest expectations. At registration Alexander was overwhelmed at the enormity of the event.

“He could barely even give his name to the organisers, however once he was able to start playing golf it was business as normal. He took it all in his stride like a pro.

“We really saw his determination and drive come out on the last day. Alexander said on the way up to Scotland he wanted to be in the top three and that’s exactly what he did.

“He thrives in a competitive environment and really puts everything into practice on the day.”

Alexander, who attends Capel Primary School, started playing the game when he was two and began lessons at four years old.

His greatest asset is his strength, which allows him to drive the ball a long way in comparision to his peers – his personal best is 203 yards.

‘We as parents just see it as our job to give him these opportunities as a child’s talent is nothing without opportunity’

Claire added: “His love for the sport is growing daily and he can’t put the club down. He’s often seen in the playground at school and at Beavers practising his swing.

“He is the one completely driving all of this, and we as parents just see it as our job to give him these opportunities as a child’s talent is nothing without opportunity.”

Alexander is in the process of getting his handicap through his club at Kings Hill, where he has been asked to represent the junior team.

He is also taking part in the British Junior Golf Tour Series ahead of competing in the US Kids World Championships at Pinehurst in August.
