Hockey: Outstanding Tunbridge Wells achieve second promotion in a row

TUNBRIDGE WELLS Men’s 1st XI are celebrating back-to-back promotions after a victorious outing in south London.

And they know that a single point from their remaining three games will see them crowned champions of South Premier League Division Two.

Mental toughness was the focus of the pre-match team talk, and skipper Jack Garwood led by example as he helped Wells take the lead early on.

A counter-attack from the home side pegged Wells back before Harry Roberts notched a fine goal to give Wells a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The second half saw a composed performance from the visitors, with a second goal for Garwood and another for Ben Brandt.

Having secured their elevation, the day got even better for Wells when they learned that second-placed Banbury had lost.

That result leaves Wells nine points clear at the top of the table with three games left.

Now they will look to put right the reverse they suffered in December against the Oxfordshire side – the only game Wells have lost all season.

They face Banbury at Kent College on Saturday (March 17, 1.30pm start).
