Prolific Powell-Downey dominates and hits quick hat-trick for Rustics
Football: Reuel Powell-Downey of The Rustics

Following last week’s disappointing defeat manager Jimmy Anderson rang the changes and Rusthall immediately played with a positive outlook and slick passing.

But despite dominating for long periods the home side had to wait until the 32nd minute to take the lead.

They were awarded a penalty after Tommy Lawrence’s run into the box was halted by a challenge from behind.

Leading scorer Luke Adams, recovered from the groin injury he picked up last week, stepped up to fire home the spot kick for his 18th goal of the season.

Rusthall doubled their lead on 42 minutes when the recalled Charlie Clover showed great composure in the area with a skilful finish.

Greenways had yet to have a shot on target, and Rusthall continued to dominate after the interval with wing-back Louis Anderson causing problems.

Just before the hour-mark Powell-Downey grabbed his first goal with a neat finish following excellent build-up play.

Three minutes later came the goal of the game as one-touch football from the Rustics left the visiting defence in disarray and Powell-Downey calmly rounded the keeper.

On 75 minutes the Croydon-based striker completed his second hat-trick of the season when he cheekily chipped the keeper for his 16th goal of the campaign.

The win keeps the Rustics in third place in the Southern Counties East League Division One, three points behind leaders Rochester United with three games in hand.

Next they entertain Croydon at the Jockey Farm Stadium Slade on Saturday (January 11, kick-off 3pm).
