ONLY five points divided these two sides prior to kick-off with Wells having won the away fixture earlier in the season by just a point. But there was a sizeable gulf between the teams by the end of the match at St Marks.
Wells started at a good tempo and scored twice in the first 10 minutes through Mike Doherty and Ryan Taylor-Dennehy, who went over after Nick Doherty’s chip forward.
The home side handled well in poor conditions and more tries followed at regular intervals. Gus O’Grady scored after a patient pick and drive and Mike Hathaway dotted down from a pushover to register a try bonus after just half an hour.
The try of the game came on 38 minutes as Blaise Salle burst up the right and handed the ball on to Matt Spicer whose pace took him the remaining 35 metres and in under the posts.
Frank Reynolds kicked the extras from the touchline to make it four out of five conversions, giving the hosts a half-time lead of 36-0.
The pace slowed as Wells faced the wind but they added further tries through Reynolds after a kick ahead on the counter from Taylor-Dennehy on 49 mins and from Mike Hathaway, who added his second after a 50-metre pick and drive.
Reynolds converted both to take his personal tally to 20 points and chalk up the half-century.
Sutton & Epsom scored two tries in injury time, Â through Joe Ridgly and skipper Steve Munford.
Wells, who are sixth in the London and South-East Premier, visit nearby Westcombe Park on Saturday (February 3, kick-off 2.30pm).
