TUNBRIDGE WELLS travelled to Hertfordshire to face Tring for the first time in the London and South East Premier Division.
The Cow Lane team have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season with three victories seeing them sit in third place in the league.
They are seasoned campaigners at this level and as Wells are starting to find out in their new league, this experience was to ultimately prove key.
Wells dominated the opening 20 minutes with Ryan Taylor-Dennehy and Richard Webster combining well. But passes went awry and the line-out was having a frustrating day.
Wells did pick up an offside penalty that Frank Reynolds slotted, but they could not increase their lead. Towards the half-hour a ruck offence saw Tom Newton take a chance to level the game.
He failed three minutes later with another penalty and Tring started to come into the game.]
Five minutes before half-time they took the lead through lock Harry Green – and 10-3 was the score at half-time.
Wells simply could not get their hands on the ball at the start of the second half and Newton slotted a 40-metre penalty goal after 50 minutes.
The visitors were handed the advantage on 69 minutes when Tring had a player sent to the sin-bin and Reynolds took the three points that were on offer to make it 13-6.
The game was now up for grabs and there was also a potential losing bonus point at stake.
However, on 78 minutes another penalty goal by Newton after a fine home attack extended Tring’s lead to 16-6 and confirmed their victory.
This Saturday Wells host Towcestrians, again for the first time, at St Marks (kick-off 3pm).
