GRACE, poise and teamwork were on display in a recent Tunbridge Wells Borough Council meeting – but it had nothing to do with the councillors present. They merely formed the audience.
Schoolgirls from Kent College’s gymnastics club performed to music at the Town Hall after being invited by the Mayor, Cllr Julia Soyke.
In a rare show of agreement, members from all parties applauded the six youngsters from the Pembury school after they performed handstands, twirls and stretches at the Full Council meeting on February 21.
Maddie Hind, Darcey Jefferies, Jemima Cynk, Evie Ginbey, Francesca Arnell and Violet Manser, aged between eight and 12, took part in the display.
Georgie Hughes, the college’s Director of Sport, said: “We are immensely proud of our gymnasts at Kent College and what they have achieved.
“We coach gymnastics to girls of all abilities as it is a fantastic sport to develop flexibility, core strength and balance.”
She added: “Gymnastics is among many of the vast sports and activities we have on offer to inspire young ladies to participate regularly.”
Explaining her unusual idea for the students to demonstrate their gymnastic skills at the meeting, Cllr Soyke said:
“I wanted to recognise the fantastic achievements of the Kent College gymnastic squad, and felt that a demonstration of their skills before the council meeting was a good way to show it.
“We were delighted that they were able to come to show us.”
