You can challenge the status quo through personal fitness training

If you’re struggling to keep up with your New Year’s resolution of eating right and staying healthy, having your very own personal trainer could be the answer. We speak to Grace Spencer, who offers some expert advice and tells us how she can help you stay fit over the coming months

Tell us how you got started as a personal trainer
I started out as a ballerina at a young age. From there, I moved into gymnastics and acro-disciplines. At 18 I took a break from all sports, and started to gain lots of weight and became very unfit. I knew I needed to make a change. Over the years, I’ve tried a few different things, but nothing has ever filled the gap for my love of fitness. This is why I chose personal training.

What areas of fitness do you specialise in?
My time as a competing ballerina and gymnast, as well as coming back from injury several times, means I have extensive personal knowledge in rehabilitation. The hardest part is the mental aspect, which is something I can really help my clients with. A lot of the time it’s mind over matter.

Is nutritional guidance as important as exercise?
Yes! It’s the most important part. Remember, abs are made in the kitchen, and understanding this fundamental rule is your key to success.

There’s no point training five times a week if you’re not going to change the way you eat. I’m with my clients every step of the way, and provide individual nutritional guidance to help them reach their desired goals.

If you had to give one piece of advice to someone looking to start and keep up their training in 2016, what would it be?
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.

This, I suppose, is a sort of mantra that I live my life by, so I ask my clients to think the same. Rather than thinking of this as a diet, it’s a lifestyle change. A diet will always fail – this is a new way of thinking. Challenge the status quo.

How do you ensure each client’s individual needs are met using personalised techniques?
I start with a consultation; half an hour to an hour, listening to the client and finding out what they want to achieve. What sets me apart is that I review all my programmes weekly. I set aside a whole day to look over each client’s progress and course, making sure we’re never standing still and always moving towards your goal.

Grace offers bespoke packages, online training, nutritional plans and personal training from Pure Gym, Salomons Estate and NDGA in Tunbridge Wells. To arrange a consultation, call 07872 508 087, or email gracesgains@yahoo.com
