Three thousand households in Kent, Sussex and Surrey were consulted by YouGov on the ‘draft masterplan’, which includes proposals to boost capacity.
Pressure group Campaign Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions [CAGNE] dismissed the poll, with the consultation into the masterplan not finishing until January 10.
Stewart Wingate, Airport Chief Executive, said the standby runway would be used for regular short-haul departures and was opposed by only 14 per cent in the poll.
“Our draft master plan sets out our vision for the airport’s sustainable growth into the 2030s and explains how it can meet the UK’s increasing demand for air travel and global connectivity,” he said.
Gatwick has also said the expansion will see an increased number of local jobs and would boost the local economy.
CAGNE protest on behalf of towns and villages which are impacted by aviation noise – which includes Tunbridge Wells and Langton Green.
A spokesman said: “Gatwick is purposely misleading people during this consultation.
“We find it appalling they have released this poll result now when the consultation does not finish until January 10.”
