Borough council’s final attempt to save Southborough bank

Grosvenor Bridge Tunbridge Wells

The fight to save the last bank in Southborough from closure at the end of the month has been stepped up following the intervention of Tunbridge Wells Borough council.

Fears that Southborough will become a ‘banking desert’ have led to the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee to issue a letter to Sara Weller CBE – an independent director at Lloyds and chairman of the bank’s Responsible Business Committee.

The letter highlights the development of the Southborough Hub and the potential increase in footfall as a reason to defer the decision and points to previous pledges by Lloyds to protect ‘the last bank’ in towns throughout the UK.
