A 17 year-old boy from Crowborough has been charged with the murder of a man from Mayfield. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of killing 52-year-old Paul Jefferies on Tuesday February 23. The boy appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court yesterday [Tuesday] for an initial hearing. He was remanded in custody, to appear before Lewes Crown Court tomorrow [March 3].
Mr Jefferies had been found dead by police who were called to his address in Coggins Mill Lane, at the edge of the village, on the evening of Thursday February 25. Concerns had been expressed that he had not been seen for a few days.
According to police, a post mortem at Tunbridge Wells Hospital found that Mr Jefferies had died from multiple injuries.
There were further arrests in the case, including that of a 17- year-old girl from Eastbourne, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both from Crowborough. They were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, and have all been released on bail until April 21 for further enquiries.
