Two local musicians are playing a concert at St Luke’s Church to try and help it avoid a ‘silent night’ this Christmas.
In September the Times reported that the church needed to raise tens of thousands of pounds to repair their hundred year old organ bellows, which are currently held together with duct tape and could soon stop working altogether.
The story struck a chord with harpist Ellen Smith and saxophonist Michael Grant, who decided to lend a hand after reading about the problem in the paper.
Mrs Smith said: “We were looking to do a Christmas concert and that same week the front page of the Times caught my eye and put St Luke’s and their organ fundraising predicament in mind.
“I approached the Reverend Caroline Glass Gower and she was very receptive to hosting our concert.
“St. Luke’s is in fact my local church, the quarterly hour chimes give structure to my day, so it’s great to be able to contribute to a very local cause, particularly a musical one.”
The concert begins at 7pm on Saturday December 12, and will feature twists on traditional carols such as Silent Night, as well as some classical pieces and folk songs.
Tickets are available in advance from Britten’s Music store and St. Luke’s Church, and on the door on the night. Tickets are £10 and include mulled wine and a mince pie, with money raised going towards the organ fund.
