Two fire engines pulled up in Grosvenor Road / Fiveways, near to the clock tower and Costa coffee shop, at around 10.30am after an alarm sounded inside a property.
Kent Fire and Rescue did not name the premises they entered. The force said faulty electrical cables were the reason for the smell and that no fire was found.
No properties were evacuated and firefighters left the scene shortly afterwards.
