The 29-year-old was agent to Craig Mackinlay when the Conservative won the tightly-fought South Thanet seat against then UKIP-Leader Nigel Farage in 2015.
Both Gray and Mackinlay are in Southwark Crown Court this month, facing allegations they broke electoral spending limits. Both men, and fellow defendant Marion Little, deny the charges.
Gray, who represented Hawkhurst on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council from 2014 until May of this year, said on Monday [November 5] he came close to quitting his job as Mackinlay’s aide.
He told the court: “I was pretty miserable…there was a certain weariness and I felt I was not being effective.”
In previous hearings, Gray said he did not know what an election agent did before taking the role and claimed to have received limited training.
He has denied one further charge of knowingly making a false expenses declaration.
