Tunbridge Wells Grammar School For Boys (TWGSB) is celebrating another successful year at the Teen Tech Awards.
Three teams of students from the school, in St John’s Road, entered the nationwide competition with one of them making it through to the final. This will be held at the prestigious Royal Society in London on Monday (20th June 2016).
The Teen Tech Awards were established in 2012 and aim to help students aged 11-18 apply the science and technology skills they have acquired in the classroom and develop them further to make life better, simpler, safer or more fun. Participating schools are provided with a suggested structure for their work and are also given exclusive access to important business contacts.
The team that reached the Teen Tech Awards 2016 final from TWGSB are Thomas Rowley and Cameron Wardrop, both 15, who were nominated in their chosen category of Safety and Security.
The duo designed an innovative dual-purpose life jacket and are working alongside the Royal Navy to further progress the idea for their product.
Yet despite the fact only one of the TWGSB teams made it to the grand final, all three groups have been recognised by the organisation for their considerable efforts in developing design ideas with gold, silver and bronze certificates awarded to all boys who took part.
Teen Tech was founded by former Tomorrow’s World presenter Maggie Philbin in 2012 and gives secondary school pupils the opportunity to explore different career possibilities in the science, technology and engineering industries.
If Thomas and Cameron’s lifejacket design wins at the overall final on June 20 then TWGSB will be awarded £1,000 and be presented with its prize by HRH Duke of York at Buckingham Palace later this year.
