Tunbridge Wells’ school children have raised £6,000 for the Calverley Adventure Grounds project.
Primary schools, nurseries and community groups were invited to participate in the Jam Jar Challenge to raise funds for the initiative, which will see an unused corner of Calverley Grounds transformed into ‘an inspiring space for children of all ages and abilities to play together’.
The fundraising idea came from Harry Bourne aged six and a regular visitor to Calverley Grounds. He decided to collect any lost coins he found in a jam jar to donate to the project. He also sold some of his old toys and did a few jobs around the house.
The fundraising committee recognised the potential of the humble jam jar and invited others to take part during the month of June.
“We were overwhelmed by the number of children who seized the opportunity to play their part and are delighted that the total raised is enough to pay for several pieces of play equipment,” said project coordinator Rhiannon Harfoot.
Claremont Primary School were crowned the Jam Jar Challenge champions raising over £3,000. Class 2C were treated to ice cream donated by Flossies for raising over £600.
It is hoped that children will continue to collect money in their jars.
Organisers are looking to raise more than £100,000 of their £225,000 target from community sponsorship. Fundraising has already topped the £35,000 mark.
