Work to replace important bridge components on the westbound A20 and the M25 in Kent will start later this month.

All projects involve the replacement of bridge expansion joints which have reached the end of their serviceable life. Expansion joints help to protect the structural integrity of a bridge by allowing it to expand and contract with seasonal changes in temperature.

The first closure is on the westbound A20 between the M20 junction 1/M25 junction 3 and the B2173 near Swanley.

Work on will take place from each night (except Saturdays) from Monday 5 October until Tuesday 13 October.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place from junction 1 of the M25 via the westbound B2173 London Road, High Street, Swanley Lane, Bartholomew Way, using the B2173 to rejoin the westbound A20.

The second closure will be on the anti-clockwise M25 between junction 5 and junction 4 near Shoreham, Kent. Work will take place each night (except Saturdays) between Wednesday 21 October and Wednesday 28 October.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place from junction 5 via the M26, A20 and M20.

The final closure will be on the clockwise M25 between junction 4 and junction 5. Work will take place each night (except Saturdays) from Monday 2 November until Monday 9 November.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place from junction 3 via the M20 eastbound, A20 London Road and M26 westbound.

Overnight closures for all projects will be in place on Monday to Thursday between 10pm and 5.30am, on Friday between 11pm and 6am, and on Sunday between 10pm and 5.30am.

Highways England’s Asset Manager, Tommy Whittingham, said: “We are carrying out this improvement work at night to minimise disruption to road users. It’s essential that the work takes place so that we can keep journeys safe and reduce the risk of unplanned maintenance in the future.”
