A one-time marathon runner who was struck down by terminal cancer is showing his gratitude for the care he receives at Hospice in the Weald by urging runners to sign up for the charity’s annual 10K Tunbridge Wells road run.
Grandfather Steve Chittenden said: “Prior to being diagnosed with a terminal illness, I would never shy away from a sporting challenge and I hope others feel the same. Why not sign up for this year’s event and help Hospice in the Weald continue to care for and support patients like me and families like mine?”
The popular event, which takes place on Sunday 20th September, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with backing from sponsors including media partner Times of Tunbridge Wells. Organisers have set a target of raising £50,000 towards the £6m it costs each year to provide the hospice’s free services.
Steve, 62, from Rotherfield, a father of three, said: “I cannot even begin to describe how important support from and in our community is to help Hospice in the Weald continue to provide their vital services. Please remember that the hospice is a charity, not part of the NHS. Hospice in the Weald have already given me and my family the most compassionate and supportive care, and I know they will continue to do so.
“The £50,000 that we want to raise could enable Hospice in the Weald to fund their In-Patient Unit in Pembury for a whole week providing 15 patients with a terminal illness specialist care, pain and symptom control in an environment where they feel safe and their families and carers supported.”
Get involved today! Runners who register online now will receive an early bird rate; £23 per adult, £15 for 12-16-year-olds and £20 for affiliated club runners (all valid until 30th June). See www.hospiceintheweald.org.uk
