Members of the Conservative-run Kent County Council have turned on the government by demanding a rethink over plans to make every school an academy.
County Councillors unanimously voted yesterday (Tuesday) to write to Nicky Morgan, the education secretary, to say the reforms were flawed and should be dropped.
The vote is particularly significant as Kent County Council is the largest Conservative-run education authority in the country.
Cllr Roger Gough, who sits as the council’s cabinet member for education, said he had ‘considerable concerns’ over the policy.
He said while he did not oppose academies he did not believe there was ‘evidence’ suggesting they were always better than maintained schools.
