IT’S the news Tunbridge Wells has been waiting for: A Waitrose has opened.
Well, kind of. The upmarket supermarket is now selling products in the reopened Shell garage on St John’s Road.
Little Waitrose, as the petrol station shop has been named, opened on Friday [August 17] and stocks a selection of products found in larger supermarkets.
Mayor Len Horwood cut the ribbon and his wife Judy was the first customer. Shell closed its doors in January for the refurbishment.
Regulars at the Tonbridge branch of the supermarket have come to appreciate the My Waitrose offers in the shop, including a complimentary cup of tea or coffee with any purchase.
These will not be available at the Little Waitrose. Instead, Costa Coffee is available to customers in store, but there will be a charge.
Ed Hall, Shell UK Alliance and Strategy Manager, said: ‘We’re pleased to announce the re-opening of Shell St Johns.
‘Working with Waitrose, we are bringing an updated and expanded store to our customers in Tunbridge Wells.
‘The service station now offers a great range of products for customers, whatever they need – whether that be grabbing a coffee or quick snack during a rest stop, or picking up groceries for tonight’s dinner.’
