Why did the MP cross the road? For Greg Clark it was the end of a long journey in securing a zebra crossing on Major York’s Road.
Tunbridge Wells motorists faced days of gridlock last month as the crossing was built on the section which connects The Pantiles with Rusthall.
But, taking time out from his duties as Secretary of State for Business, Mr Clark agreed the infrastructure was worth the wait as he officially opened it on Friday [March 9].
“The campaign to get this crossing built has been a long slog,” said Mr Clark.
“Major York’s Road divides the Common in two and has lacked a crossing. Many people who use the Common, as well as people who park their car in the fairground car-park, will find it a boon to be able to cross safely.”
Mr Clark was joined for the opening by Tunbridge Wells borough councillors Catherine Rankin, Chris Woodward and Barbara Cobbold as well as John Barber and Chris Gurr of Friends of Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons.
The MP added: “John Barber in particular has been tenacious in his efforts to get the crossing built – so it’s really great to see it finally in place and being used.”
Mr Barber said: “The Friends of the Commons thank everybody who supported the creation of this excellent crossing.”
