A team of junior riders from Mayfield School are celebrating becoming the National Schools’ Equestrian Association County Champions after they beat 30 other regions last week at the Inter-County Show Jumping finals at Bury Farm in Buckinghamshire.
The pupils, aged from 14 to 16, were representing East Sussex and rode exceptionally well to advance to both National County Champions at Intermediate level and Reserve Champions at Open level.
The two teams were made up of Kitty Ashby, 13, Catherine Haurie Moss, 14, Scarlett Vereker, 16, Amy Whiffen, 16, and Molly Faulkner, who celebrated her 14th birthday on the day of the prestigious show jumping competition.
Quickest
The girls have been training for the event over the past year, dedicating many hours a week to riding after they have finished their studies.
Jill Barker, Director of Riding at the independent all-girls’ school in Mayfield, said: “This emphatic win is such a fantastic result for our intermediate team. Not only were they the only team to have all four riders jumping double clear, but they were also the quickest by 17 seconds!
“All of our riders followed the team plan and rode exceptionally well, and I am very proud of them.”
