Tunbridge Wells mayor David Elliott paired his chain of office with a hard hat and hi-vis jacket when he lent a helping hand at a building site.
The mayor was leading a symbolic ‘laying of the brick’ ceremony for charity Abbeyfield at Hale Court, their new housing development on Park Road.
Due to open in 2016, Hale Court will provide 19 independent living flats with 24-hour onsite care for elderly local residents.
Cllr Elliott said: “I am very pleased to be here today to lead the ‘laying of the brick ceremony.”
“This is of special interest to me as a relative of mine, Mrs Barbara Williams, received an MBE for her charitable work for Abbeyfield in East Kent.”
The Abbeyfield Society’s chief executive, Natasha Singarayer said: “This is a very proud moment, seeing how the development is actually taking form.
“Hale Court celebrates local benefactor Royston Hale, who through his generous contribution and work with The Abbeyfield Society has helped to support this fantastic development.”
Hale Court will be available for viewing early next year, with residents moving in during spring and summer.
