Monopoly is the 'Christmas number one' in Tunbridge Wells

Last minute shoppers are helping to make the Royal Tunbridge Wells Edition of the board game Monopoly one of the biggest selling Christmas presents.

It is estimated that ‘thousands’ of the special edition, costing up to £30, have been bought.
Tom Chapman, Manager of the toy department at Fenwick, said yesterday [Tuesday]: “It has been a really big success for us. We have had the giant board (pictured) above the till which has drawn a lot of interest.”

He added that the department store only had about 30 boxes remaining from the 244 they had ordered.
The game has also been flying off the shelves at Waterstones that has so far sold 210 sets.

Neil Pennell, proprietor of The Gift Store in Royal Victoria Place has devoted almost the entire shop window to a display of the board game and it has paid off with sales being ‘greater than expected’.

He said: “It’s great that Tunbridge Wells has been immortalised forever. It gets all the family together at this time of year.”

A spokesperson for Winning Moves that produces Monopoly, told the Times that thousands of copies of the Tunbridge Wells game have been sold.

He said: “We have made an estimate based on sales and we believe that every other home at least in Royal Tunbridge Wells will be playing the town’s Monopoly over the festive period.”

The Royal Tunbridge Wells edition features landmark names from all over the town including G.Collins
& Sons, The Pantiles, Calverley Grounds and, of course, the Times of Tunbridge Wells.

When the local edition was first announced in the Times in March residents were encouraged to nominate what they thought should appear on the colour coded ‘streets’.
