PEOPLE in Tunbridge Wells have been so enthusiastic over having their town commemorated as an edition of Monopoly that the company behind the customised set said it had already received over 500 submissions suggesting what should fill the empty spaces.
A spokesman for game wholesaler Winning Moves UK, which selected the town over rivals Royal Leamington Spa and Windsor, said they were ‘overwhelmed’ by the response.
He added: “It has been fantastic to have so many people submit ideas in the first few days. We have enough to fill the board many times over but we are still hoping for more responses before the polls close.”
The announcement on March 15 has led to a raft of suggestions including having a local charity represented as Community Chest, putting the council buildings on White Hall or an antique shop for Old Kent Road.
However, suggestions such as sending players to Tonbridge instead of jail have met with some resistance. Joshua Cook, posting on the Times Facebook page defended the neighbouring town. He said: “Send to Tonbridge instead of jail? Maybe the board could feature Waitrose? Oh actually that’s Tonbridge…..or a castle! Nope, Tonbridge again.”
Robert Osborne, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK – who produce the game under license from Hasbro – thanked all those who have submitted their ‘wonderful suggestions’ so far.
