Tunbridge Wells MP appointed to Cabinet as minister for Levelling Up

Mr Clark last served in the Cabinet under Theresa May as Secretary of State for Business until July 2019.

His promotion back to a paid government job comes after Boris Johnson sacked Michael Gove, after the former minister insisted the PM resign yesterday following mass resigantions from other ministers.

Mr Johnson announced this morning he would indeed stand down but intends to stay on as an interim PM and is having to form a new cabinet following a raft of resignations in his top team.

More than 50 MPs resigned from government or party roles when amass exodus was triggered by the resignations of Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid from the Cabinet on Tuesday night (July 5).

The leadership crisis followed the scandal surrounding former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher, who quit after allegedly assaulting two men while drunk at London’s Carlton Club.

Downing Street initially said Mr Johnson had no knowledge of previous allegations against Mr Pincher, but the Prime Minister later acknowledged he had been informed of inappropriate behaviour dating back to 2019, and said he regretted keeping him in government beyond that point.

Following the resignation of the Health Secretary and Chancellor on Tuesday night, a further four Cabinet ministers, 23 ministers, and 22 parliamentary private secretaries and three vice-chairs or deputy chairs of the Conservative party also resigned.

Five trade envoys also quit their jobs, although Greg Clark as Special Trade Envoy to Japan, did not resign from his unpaid role.

It is not clear if he can now continue in the envoy role while also serving as a cabinet minister.

The only other Kent MPs who held a government job under Mr Johnson were Sevenoaks MP Laura Trott, who was parliamentary private secretary at the Department for Transport under Johnson, and Faversham and Mid Kent MP Helen Whately who was Exchequer secretary to the Treasury.

Both resigned this week before Mr Johnson stepped down.
