Tunbridge Wells commuters were among those evacuated from part of a London to Hastings train on Friday evening after one of the carriages was ‘shot at’.
The Southeastern train came to a halt just after 7pm at Tonbridge.
Commuter Birgit Clark, a lawyer, said: “There was a little announcement saying ‘sorry for the delay, we’ve just evacuated the first carriage because we’ve been shot at.’
“It was just so bizarre and surreal. The message was delivered in such a calm way, like it was normal.”
There was further confusion when police were called and found a broken window – but said it had been smashed an hour earlier while passing through Dunton Green station.
Police are still uncertain what was fired at the train, but say it could have been a rock or stone.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were made aware that the outer skin of a train window was smashed while passing through Dunton Green station. The damage had been caused around an hour prior to the report.
“At this time, it is unclear what struck the window. Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish what caused the damage.”
A spokesman for Southeastern Railway said: “As a precautionary measure, passengers in the front carriage of the train were directed to move to another carriage at Tonbridge station. There was a four-minute delay while passengers moved.”
