Tell us how Sew Grove Hill got started
I was working with my friend in a shop in Maidstone and decided to open another business in Tunbridge Wells. I have a few friends here who own shops and gave me advice. They suggested that I call the shop Sew Grove Hill because of where we’re based in the town.
How long have you been in business?
We’ve been here for about a month. I was at the Maidstone shop for a long time, and have been in the trade for 25 years.
What kinds of services do you provide?
We offer our customers alterations and dry cleaning in one hour, or 24 hours, so if you drop off your dry cleaning, you have the choice of picking it up that same day or the next day – it’s up to you.
Are alterations a big part of what you do?
Alterations is the main part of our business, and we’ve got a laundry machine and a dry cleaner as well. But we don’t do the dry-cleaning here – we’ve got another shop in Maidstone and work together.
What sets you apart from other businesses?
Other dry cleaners have a two-week turnaround for customers, but here we leave the choice of one hour or the next day to the customer, so we can do it a lot faster. We want to be the top dry cleaner in the town.
In what ways do you ensure your prices remain competitive within the local marketplace?
Before we opened, we did a lot of research to find out what kinds of prices our competitors were offering. We’re the cheapest in the town, as well as the fastest.
Where would you like to take the business going forward?
We’ve been very happy since we opened. We’re already doing work for Simmonds on Monson Road, which we started a few weeks ago. We’ve produced 50,000 leaflets and continue to advertise, so we’re doing our best and are looking forward to generating more business in the future.
