The Kent Literacy Awards celebrate and share best practice in primary and secondary schools across the south east by recognising initiatives that develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
Nick Butterworth, who has penned numerous books including the Percy the Park Keeper collection and sold 15 million copies of his books in 30 languages, was given the task of choosing the Champion of Champions Award. He chose St Gregory’s as the overall winner and then presented a hand-drawn and signed illustration to Kim Stanley, the school’s librarian.
Mrs Stanley said: “These award evenings are so important to celebrate literacy and to promote the people who work so hard to motivate students in our schools. The whole evening was so inspirational listening to other people’s initiatives; they are so creative and imaginative. In this time of school funding shortages it is wonderful to see so many people thinking outside the box with ways to enthuse students at very little cost.”
