Hundreds of less fortunate youngsters can look forward to a happier Christmas thanks to the Teddy Mayor Toy Appeal.
Since 1989 donated gifts have been delivered to children and teenagers around Tunbridge Wells borough who may not otherwise have had a present.
Mayor Julia Soyke launched the 2017 charity appeal on Wednesday [November 22] in Royal Victoria Place with a cheque presentation from Tesco, pledging £200 worth of gift vouchers.
She said: “I am hoping to make a great many children happy, there are a lot of disadvantaged people in Tunbridge Wells.
“The feedback we have had has been really encouraging and it is getting more support every year. It is not just one toy per child as each of them will receive a large bag.”
This year organisers expect around 300 youngsters to benefit from the scheme, most of whom have been recommended by social services.
Businesses and the public are encouraged to donate gifts at a number of drop-off points around the town, as well as in Cranbrook and Paddock Wood, with the final day on Friday, December 15.
Some venues will feature Christmas ‘giving trees’, with tags that offer ideas for suitable gifts. There is also an online Amazon Wishlist featuring lots of suggestions.
Toys, games, books, puzzles and DVDs are collected and sorted by volunteers at The Big Yellow Self Storage Company depot in Longfield Road.
