Police confirmed yesterday [Tuesday] that the deaths of two people in a Tunbridge Wells flat are still being treated as ‘unexplained’.
Alongside ambulance and fire officers, Kent Police were called to an address on the corner of Grove Hill Road and Sutherland Road shortly after noon Wednesday [November 6].
Engineers from gas firm SGN were also at the scene which led to local speculation there had been a gas leak.
The police has not commented on the link. A force spokesman said: “Two people were declared dead at the scene. The deaths are being treated as unexplained and post mortem examinations will be carried out.”
The two were locally said to be men and the police reported that the post-mortem is likely to happen before the weekend.
The police spokesman added: “The occupants of neighbouring addresses were asked to temporarily leave their homes as a precaution while SGN engineers attended to check the premises, but have now been permitted to return.
“There is no threat to public safety.”
Sutherland Road residents said they were unaware of the cause of death.
A man who wished only to be named as Chris said: “We do not know the people who died. As it is rented accommodation a lot of people come and go.
“There was a strong police presence and they were here for a long time.”
A female resident, who did not wish to be named, added: “The road was shut for four hours as the police cornered it off so I couldn’t access my house.”
