Following an agenda-packed meeting, councillors decided to postpone deliberations on Calverley Square to give more time to debate the project.
Councillors could have voted to extend the four-hour limit of the meeting, but opted to delay any debate after independent councillor for Paddock Wood [East], Rodney Atkins, forwarded a motion to postpone and arrange another meeting.
He told councillors another meeting was necessary ‘so that time can be given to the decision that this Calverley Square project needs’
This was seconded by Hugo Pound and carried.
Earlier, councillors had been told that contracts to begin the construction on Calverley Square needed to be signed by October 28 or the Council risked losing its contractors and incurring further costs.
As the next Full Council meeting is scheduled for December 18, the Cabinet will hope to confirm a new meeting to discuss the fate of the development in the coming weeks.
