The pupil who contracted Covid-19 had last been at the school on Wednesday, October 7.

But following advice from Public Health England, all of the Year 8 pupils at the school, – around 200 boys aged beween 12 and 13 – were told this morning [Friday, October 16] they would have to return home to self-isolate until next week.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The reason for this is that we are operating a year group bubble system and therefore there is a possibility that other Year 8 students will have come into contact with the student concerned.”

She added: “As the family had already acted to self-isolate, this minimises the isolation period for the rest of the year group and they have been advised to self-isolate at home until Wednesday October 21.”

She continued: “All students who are self-isolating will be provided with live lesson remote learning for the period of time that they are not in the school and we are confident that the evolved e-Learning will deliver a robust educational experience.

“Parents have been notified of the current situation and provided with advice on how to support their child(ren); the families of students self-isolating without symptoms do not also need to self-isolate.”

It is the second time the school on St John’s Road has had to send pupils home.

In September, 200 boys in Year 7 were sent home for ten days after a student returned a positive coronavirus test.
