AFTER becoming one of last summer’s surprise hits, the Tonbridge Calling festival is back even bigger and better this Saturday [August 12], kicking off at noon at the Racecourse Park.
The free arts and food event was first staged to unite the town after the divisive Brexit referendum and a spate of hate crimes that followed.
Despite being organised by a team of six in just six weeks, it attracted more than 1,000 people.
This year, organisers are again aiming to capture the unifying spirit, with music from local artists Lazlo Baby, Hobo and the Hippies, The Violet Jive, Salsadelic, Bea Everett, Petit Bijoux, the Anaconda Belly Dancers and Pengenista Drummers. Sulston’s Kitchen, Sukoo Sukoo, Kay’s Kitchen and Tonbridge Old Fire Station are supplying a bar and BBQ.
Founder Fred Long said: “We set the bar high for 2017, but I truly believe that, with our wonderful community’s support, we can repeat 2016’s success.”
Organiser Faydra Mitchell added: “This incredible event breaks down social barriers and brings Tonbridge people together. That’s why it works so well, and why I love being involved.”
