Tonbridge is next after growing chain opens store in Maidstone

BUDGET supermarket Aldi has continued its expansion into Kent when Olympic rowing
medallist Frances Houghton opened a new store in Maidstone.

The shop in Well Road became the third in the county after Swanley and Aylesford but as
its profits increase the German brand will not be stopping there.

Aldi is already building on the former Homebase site in Cannon Lane, Tonbridge, with
the £2.8million store set to open in spring next year – creating 50 jobs.

The chain has long-discussed a move into Tunbridge Wells with a site on Eridge Road
originally earmarked but it is understood Aldi is still looking for a suitable plot.

At the Maidstone store opening Houghton, who won silver medals in the Athens, Beijing and Rio games, gave out Christmas crackers to shoppers before cutting the ribbon.

An Aldi spokesman said: “Shoppers can expect quality products, a Christmas range and
gifts for all the family, along a premium range of fruit and veg.

“In a welcome boost for the local economy, 40 new jobs have been created with store
launch, and Aldi is still recruiting for a variety of roles in the area.”
